Indian weddings have always been known for their 'big fat wedding' approach. With extravagant decor and over-the-top themes, Indian weddings often have too much waste. In the latest move to promote a greener approach to weddings, Bengaluru mothers Anupama Harish and Charulatha R decided to step up and host a no-plastic, low-waste wedding for their children, Ashutosh and Nidhi.

A zero-waste wedding is absolutely the need of the hour and these Bengaluru women did it right.
Better India says, "One would usually think that low-waste execution is only possible in small-scale weddings. But Anupama and Charulatha made sure the template worked for their big fat Indian wedding. They had more than 1,000 guests for the reception and muhurtam. Yet, no plastic waste was generated." So how did they achieve this feat?
According to SWRMT Bengaluru, over 4000 meals were served over three days, eventually leading to 1000 kg of wet waste, which was then turned into 300 kg of compost. "It's easier and cleaner. There is no waste lying around. The venue was clean all the time. One just needs to have the will to live a plastic-free life," said Anupama.

The mothers wanted to make an impact on their kids' special day. The meals were served using only banana leaves steel plates, steel tumblers, steel cups and steel spoons. Moreover, it was ensured that no or a minimum of plastic is used as return gifts were also packed using paper and cloth and the invites also mentioned to avoid bringing any bouquets and gift-wrapped presents. Well, isn't it one of a kind wedding?
Well, when the world needs a better path for everything in order to become eco-friendly, these mindful mothers truly made a powerful choice to do their bit. Low-waste weddings are something that we all need to adapt to, in order to be sustainable.
This is truly an inspiring example of skipping the big affair to go light on both the environment and the wallet without compromising the love or joy of the momentous occasion.
