And for those of us who don't believe in the Hallmark holiday, fuelled by the hungry hands of consumerism, it can be an exercise in patience and self-control to watch the world profess their love to anything and anyone that can help them engender more likes and hearts on social media. We get it, we really do - if you're a non-believer it can be a trying time and a difficult day to get through, without losing your cool. And celebrities usually don't help, throwing themselves whole-heartedly behind the V-day brigade. But no matter how strong your anti-Valentine's Day sentiment is, we guarantee you, there's no way you will be able to resist nodding vigorously after reading actress Kalki Koechlin's unique take on the celebration of all things love and relationships.
In a cleverly-worded and witty Instagram post, Kalki used the opportunity of Valentine's Day to spread awareness about eco-friendly and sustainable living. She wrote, "Broke up with my toxic ex, plastic, and working on my sustainable relationship with stainless steel..."
How does one not cheer for a Valentine's Day message tailored to help protect our fragile eco-system, no matter how fleeting its impact? We have to admit, we're not big fans of grand pronouncements of love on social media, especially on Valentine's Day, but this, this we absolutely approve of.
This isn't even the first time Kalki has used a timely opportunity to insert her eco-friendly agenda into the conversation. A couple of days ago, while taking on the 'PadMan challenge' she posted a photo of herself posing with a reusable, eco-friendly cotton sanitary pad, tagging it #sustainablemenstruation
Using eco-friendly and non-toxic products seems to be something of a longstanding passion project with Kalki. In August last year too, she posted about organic sanitary pads.
It's not just sustainable menstruation, Kalki has used the reach of her social media to talk about and promote brands dedicated to sustainable fashion as well. Last year, she posted a photo of herself using a 100% upcycled pyjama set and eye-mask, made from waste from the garment industry.
Valentine's Day or not, we hope more celebrities like Kalki Koechlin start using the power of social media to spread important messages like these.
