Achieving a natural glow often takes us to unnatural means. Perfect skin is every woman's dream and social media seems to have the answer to it all. Or so we think so. After a video by beauty influencer, Isabelle Lux went viral on the internet, people are turning to carrots to get a perfectly natural tan. The beauty vlogger's video shows how she ate 3 raw carrots a day for years which has given her skin a natural tint that looks in stark contrast to her childhood pictures. As for many social media trends, beauty hacks can go awfully wrong, often backed by medical experts advising people to refrain from the trend. This particular trend, however, has not raised many eyebrows in the medical world.

In the medical world, this is a common skin condition called carotenemia caused by overeating foods containing carotene like sweet potatoes, oranges, pumpkin and you guessed it right, carrots. Excess carotene in the blood discolours the skin giving it that light orange tint that influencers like Isabelle have embraced for a natural tan that tanning lotions and sessions have not been able to give.
According to New York City-based nutritionist, Jaclyn London, "the risks of carotenemia are pretty nominal." However, an excess of anything can prove to be a hazard for the body, and yes even too many carrots. Contrary to one's concern about not having enough vegetables in your diet, an excess of just one vegetable or fruit can be a "sign of restrictive eating, masquerading as healthy eating.” Another common problem one can face is undernutrition from the lack of other vegetables in the diet.

Isabelle shared another video with the caption, “Healthy girl easy recipe carrot salad for gut and hormone healing & it naturally tans skin!” Demonstrating how she prefers it, Isabelle revealed that she peels her carrot in a bowl and then adds apple cider vinegar, salt and some olive oil to it. After mixing it all properly she ate it like a salad.
As with any beauty trend on social media or otherwise, it is always advised to consult your doctor before trying it to avoid any potential health hazard.
