Take a thick leaf of aloe vera, remove the pulp from within it and throw away the skin. Mix the pulp of half a tomato with it. Combine them together and apply all over the elbows and knees. Allow it to dry for 15 minutes and wash off with cold water. While aloe soothes the damaged area, tomato's natural bleaching agents handle the dark patches.

The bleaching mask

In a bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of besan (gram flour) with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of cold water to form a thick paste. Apply the mixture liberally over your knees and elbows and leave it to dry for 20 minutes and wash off with warm water. With lemon's citric acid and gram flour's brightening powers, the paste is bound to leave your joints brighter. Repeat twice a week for a month to see results.

The sugar scrub

Mix together 3 tablespoons of granulated white sugar with 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Scrub this coarse paste gently over your knees and elbows, then allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Finally, wash it off with warm water and soap. Bonus-if you have any left over, use it to exfoliate your lips. This remedy banishes dead skin cells and also moisturises. Repeat weekly to see the difference.

The coconut pack

To 3 tablespoons of coconut oil, add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Mix and massage this over your knees and elbows. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes and wash away with warm water. The milk scrub

Make a mound of 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl with a hollow in the centre. In it, pour 3 teaspoons of cold milk and combine thoroughly while the baking soda activates. Now massage it on your dark knees and elbows in a circular motion and leave it to dry naturally for 15 minutes. This scrub will work wonders to get rid of darkness without being too harsh on the skin.

The sour mask

When vinegar and curd come together, you know it's going to be an effective home remedy. To reduce darkness on your knees and elbows with it, mix 2 teaspoons of vinegar with 3 tablespoons of natural sour curd. Mix thoroughly, apply it over the affected area and let it dry for 10 minutes. The acidic properties of this mask will ensure brighter, healthier skin on your joints.
