Sambhal: A Samajwadi Party legislator and his supporters allegedly beat-up a police constable Thursday when he inadvertently entered the legislator's house while chasing an accused.

Senior police officer Sabharaj Yadav said that constables Satyendra Singh and Mehboob Ali had gone to Babrala in Uttar Pradesh to probe an abduction case.

"The accused ran inside Gunnaur MLA Ram Khiladi Yadav's house. When Satyendra tried to follow him he was stopped, and roughed up by the MLA's supporters. Ali, who was waiting outside, was also chased away by the MLA's supporters," Mr Yadav said.

The police have registered an FIR against the Samajwadi Party legislator and 15 others based on the complaint of the two constables.

However, the legislator's supporters have filed a counter FIR alleging that constable Satyendra Singh had used "foul language and tried to forcibly enter the legislator's house".

The Sambhal legislator has however denied charges that his supporters broke the law, saying instead that the constable had tried to arrest a person without a valid warrant, and also that the police had registered an FIR on his behalf, wherein he claimed he was being defamed as part of a political conspiracy.
