Lucknow: Two people have been arrested for the torture and murder of a 32-year-old Lucknow woman,  Samajwadi Party leader Gaurav Bhatia told NDTV today, on a day when party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav faced flak over his insensitive comment about the increasing number of crimes against women in the Uttar Pradesh.

The badly mutilated body of the woman, a mother of two, was found in a school in Lucknow on Thursday. She was killed on Wednesday night at the government-run school in the city's Bahadurkheda area, police say.

The post-mortem report had said that the woman had died due to hemorrhage caused by multiple injuries, but it could not confirm whether she had been raped.

The report also said that the woman sustained 12 injures.

The woman was allegedly stripped and stabbed several times. There were stab wounds even on her private parts, said the report. She was brutalised with an object like a crowbar, suspect police.

The ruling Samajwadi Party government, led by Mr Yadav's son Akhilesh, has come under fire in the last few months over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and several cases of violence against women.

When queried by reporters about the death of the Lucknow woman and the rising number of rape cases, Mr Yadav told reporters, "There are 21 crore people in Uttar Pradesh, yet the number of such rape cases are the least here".

Opposition parties criticized Mr Yadav over the callous comment. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, "Even one such case is shameful. The government should ensure that not a single such case happens".

"The Uttar Pradesh government should give special attention to the security of women and children. The state of security here is not good," said Human Resources Development Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani.
