UP constable writes to President seeking permission to kill self
Lucknow: A police constable in Uttar Pradesh has written to the President seeking permission to kill himself. Harishchandra, who is posted in Police Lines in Fatehpur, says harassment and exploitation at the hands of his seniors has forced him to do this.

"I have written to the President. I have written to the Chief Minister and also the district administration, but no one listens to me. I keep getting headache. I have lost vision in my right eye. Doctors tell me that I faint due to stress," the 35-year-old told NDTV, adding that he is disappointed and sees "no end to this exploitation."

When district Superintendent of Police RK Chaturvedi was informed about Harishchandra's plea to the President, he first denied receiving any complaint from the constable. "Since the day I have taken over as the district SP, not once has the constable come to me. I will get the charges probed and do what I think is right".

His response later was even more callous. "There is no provision for allowing someone to end his life, but if someone wants to commit suicide, there is a railway track and they are free to die."

Harishchandra stays with his brother and his family in Fatehpur.
