Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: A dreaded criminal, Badan Singh, serving life sentence, escaped on Thursday after allegedly entertaining police personnel in a hotel where alcohol was served. Six policemen and three others were arrested said the police at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
Guarded by six cops, he was in transit from Fatehgarh Central Jail to a court in Ghaziabad, for a hearing. On the way back the police party had apparently stopped with the criminal at a hotel in Meerut.
Badan Singh, 48, was convicted last year for the murder of a lawyer in 1996. Known as 'Baddo' in the underworld, he is known for his lavish lifestyle. Singh has 10 cases of murder, extortion and robbery against him.
"Badan Singh, an arrested criminal escaped police custody reportedly after throwing a liquor party for police personnel in a hotel. Six police officials and three civilians have been arrested in the case and an investigation is underway," senior police officer, Akhilesh Narayan Singh told news agency ANI.
Sources in the police say senior officers are in a tizzy over the escape of the gangster from police custody. It is not clear how a high profile undertrial was taken to a hotel, during transit, ignoring standard operative procedures sources said. Investigators believe it was complete negligence of cops who were guarding him.
Singh was arrested by the Meerut police in October last year. For a month he was in Meerut jail but later he was shifted to Fatehgarh Central Jail in Farrukhabad district over security concerns.
