Meerut police on Friday used batons to disperse protesting students caught in a turf war between the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, who have been at loggerheads for the last several months. Seven students were arrested and a few sustained minor injuries.
VC Goyal, the university's Vice Chancellor and Manoj Singh, the Registrar, have been at odds with each other over various administrative matters, including examination dates. Things came to a head when the vice chancellor got the office of the Registrar sealed by the police, citing a transfer order. Mr Singh contested the claim and refused to vacate his position.
