A Delhi Police head constable was shot dead and a constable suffered bullet injuries when unidentified men opened fire at them in an apparent road rage incident in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on Tuesday evening, police said.
The personnel posted with Special Staff Unit of South District Police were near Gang Nahar on Meerut bypass at around 5:15 PM when the incident took place.
The deceased has been identified as head constable Sanjeev, who hailed from Saharanpur.
"An unfortunate incident occurred with the men of special staff of South District, in Meerut. Sanjeev was shot at on right side of his chest while constable Sachin was shot at on his knee. Both were admitted at Subharti Hospital in Meerut. Sanjeev died in hospital," a senior police official said.
The incident was reported to the Delhi Police Headquarters by constable Vivek, who was also with the duo.
"They had gone there to do recce to trace auto-lifters. They were shot by miscreants who blocked their vehicle. The attackers were in their car. It appears to be a case of road rage as they opened fire after an argument," the official said.
