Mumbai: At least 12 people were killed after a major fire broke out at a snack shop in Mumbai's Saki Naka area around 4 this morning. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Control team, the blaze was reported at a shop on Khairani Raod, near Laxmi Narayan Temple and the building, said to be around 200 feet in area, came crashing down.

About 15 workers were sleeping inside the shop when the fire erupted. The fire quickly spread to electric wiring, furniture and other belongings, trapping many of the workers, said the shop's owner. A few of them managed to escape, but some of them are still feared to be trapped there. Rescue operation is in progress.

Fire engines rushed to the spot and victims were taken to a hospital in Ghatkopar.

Ambulances and fire engines rushed to the spot. About 12 of them were pulled out from under the debris but were declared brought dead, said Dr Shital, assistant medical officer, Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.

The victims are yet to be identified and the cause of the fire is still not known.
