17-Year-Old Arrested for Theft Dies in Juvenile Custody After Alleged Sexual Assault, Torture

The teen died at Nair Hospital on May 23 after suffering several internal injuries.

Mumbai: A 17-year-old boy who was arrested for theft and sent to a juvenile home in Mumbai earlier this month, died after he was allegedly sexually assaulted and brutally beaten up by fellow inmates, including an adult.

The teen died at Nair Hospital on May 23 after suffering several internal injuries. He had stated in his dying declaration that he was beaten up, sexually assaulted and tortured by the two inmates and the third person at a juvenile home in Matunga in central Mumbai.

In a video recorded before he died, the 17-year-old said, "There was someone called 'mama'. He had a whole gang with him. There were around 15 to 20 of them. I had high fever at night. They hit me on the head with a bat and a stick. After beating me up they made me work till 12 pm. All of them were intoxicated. They used to order weed and money. And those who did not get these things for them, they were beaten up."

"The policeman was too scared to do anything and stood helpless. He came and gave me balm and medicine, and asked me not to tell anyone about all this."

A case has been registered at the Shivaji Park Police station.

"He had begged them for mercy. He was granted bail on May 20. He was carried to the car by two people. When the effect of the drugs subsided he started complaining. We took him to hospital but the doctors asked us to take him home. He died after his condition worsened," the teen's father told NDTV.

"They were giving me a post mortem report on white paper. I refused to collect the body till they gave me a proper report. I demand that the authorities at the juvenile home should be suspended," he added.

The teen's brother said, "A man known as Mama was among those who assaulted my brother. He supplies drugs to the inmates of the home. He is not a minor but he still stays at the home."
