Mumbai: A 21-year old law student was arrested yesterday for rash driving after her car spun out of control and hit seven people and three rickshaws.
The incident occurred at around 9.30 am at Gulmohar Road, Shikshan Mandal Chowk, near ONGC colony when Karishma Balaji Rao, a resident of Oshiwara, lost control of her car and crashed into a pavement.
"She was driving so fast that she first rammed a tea stall, then three rickshaws and eventually came to a stop after she crashed into the pavement," said an official from the Juhu police station.
The officer added that seven pedestrians who were walking on the road suffered injuries and after the autos fell on them.
The victims were identified as Sandhya Lokhande (22), Shamshul Haq (25), Rajesh Kakreja (22), Gundaji Kamble (50), Jaywant Chorghe (50) Prakash Kadam (30) and Vijay Kumar Baba (45).
They all sustained multiple injuries and fractures. The victims have been admitted to Cooper Hospital for their treatment.
Meanwhile, Inspector Ashoka Pimple, inspector, Juhu police station added, "Balaji was trapped in her car and had to be removed after we cut off the door of the driver's seat."
Police say she did not appear to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
However, they are awaiting her medical reports from Cooper Hospital.
Karishma was booked and arrested on charges of causing hurt due to negligence and rash driving. She will be produced in the court today.
