At least five people suffocated to death and four others were injured in a major fire that swept a timber warehouse in Bhiwandi town early today.
According to Thane police, the blaze was reported at 2 am in the timber goods warehouse in Mankoli.
The fire fighters managed to rescue four people alive while five others lost their lives.
The cause of the fire has not been ascertained as yet but it was brought under control by daybreak after a four-hour operation.
The injured have admitted to local hospitals, where the condition of three of them is reported to be serious.
