60-yr-old gets prison time for raping step-granddaughter

Mumbai: The Mumbai Sessions Court on Monday convicted a 60-year-old man and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment for raping his six-year-old step-granddaughter in 2011. The accused, Hari Gani Ingale, who hails from Buldhana was convicted mainly on the basis of the girl's own testimony.

The victim's mother and initial complainant, turned hostile during the course of the trial. Ingale has also been fined Rs 10,000.

In December 2011, Ingale raped the girl after getting drunk while she was alone. He threatened her and told her not to tell her mother. When he raped her again a few days later, she ran to her aunt's residence.

The victim's mother had married Ingale's son after divorcing her first husband when the victim was a six-month-old infant. Ingale stayed with the family in their Mankhurd home whenever he visited.

The incident came to light after a quarrel between the girl's mother and Ingale, when the girl decided to confide in her mother.

A medical examination of the victim confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.
