62-year-old widow raped by family friend

Mumbai: A 62-year-old former schoolteacher was raped by an acquaintance at her Powai residence on Saturday. The Powai police have arrested one Ashok Kumar (42), who hails from the victim's hometown in Mangalore and had been a family friend for some time.

The police said that the accused was arrested on Sunday morning from his residence in Borivli.

Being an acquaintance of the victim, the accused would visit her place often. On Saturday afternoon, like any other day, he went to her house to have lunch, following which he raped her.

After consulting the victim's relatives, she was immediately admitted to Bombay Hospital, through which a complaint was lodged at Powai police station. The FIR was filed early on Sunday.

"The incident took place at 1.30 pm on Saturday and we have arrested the accused, who lives in Borivli. The victim, being a widow, lived alone at her Marol residence, as both of her children work and live outside the city. There wasn't any motive behind the rape, as there is no case of robbery or theft," said Chhering Dorje, deputy commissioner of police.

He added, "Bombay Hospital informed us about the incident at 1 am on Sunday and we registered an FIR and arrested the accused."

The police said that the victim is a former schoolteacher. Her daughter works with an airline company and is settled abroad while her son is in Bangalore. "She frequently visits Mangalore and she had recently visited her hometown for four months. The accused hailed from the same hometown and became her family friend long ago," said a senior police inspector.

Kumar has been booked under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in Andheri Court today.
