Former partner of French President Francois Hollande, Valerie Trierweiler, is expected to reach Mumbai tonight, despite his announcement on Saturday that he had split with his longstanding companion.
It would be Trierweiler's first public appearance since it emerged that Hollande had an affair with French actress Julie Gayet.
Although not married to Hollande, she had assumed the role of the French First Lady at official functions after his election in 2012.
Trierweiler is expected to reach Mumbai late tonight for a trip organised by Action Against Hunger (Action Contre la Faim, ACF), despite no longer being France's First Lady. On Monday, she is expected to attend a press conference organised by the Fight Hunger Foundation, an organisation working to prevent, detect and treat malnutrition in over 45 countries.
The former French First Lady had to be hospitalised for a week after news broke about Hollande's involvement with the 41-year-old Gayet, and had to spend time at a presidential retreat outside Paris.
Trierweiler, who was treated in hospital for "tiredness" brought on by the scandal, was invited to India in her official capacity, ACF has said.
In Mumbai, Trierweiler is scheduled visit a hospital, where ACF runs a feeding project for malnourished children, in order to witness a training programme for medical staff, the charity organisation said.
She would also lunch with wives of top businessmen as well as attend a charity gala dinner at a five-star hotel in South Mumbai.
The dinner has been organised to promote Fight Hunger Foundation, ACF's local charity partner, with Trierweiler as the guest of honour.
She would be shown around the city by French actress Charlotte Valandrey, who is involved in the cause of promoting organ donations and transplants.
The trip is widely expected to generate intense press interest, given her refusal so far, to speak about the issue.
A press conference is planned for Monday, though Trierweiler herself may not address it, ACF said.
Incidentally, this would be Trierweiler's second visit to India, after she visited India in February last year, along with the French President, when she spoke of her desire as First Lady, to become a champion of children's rights.
