Mumbai:
The wife of an army jawan has been arrested for allegedly stealing 16 tolas (160 grams) of gold ornaments from the residence of her husband's friend. The jawan, who is posted at Nainital, Uttarakhand, while leaving for duty, asked his wife to stay with his friend's family at their residence, cops said.
The woman after staying with the family for a few days stole the jewellery worth Rs 4.36 lakh and fled to Panvel where she took refuge in a hospital to avoid detection. She was, however, nabbed by the cops on Tuesday, after they had launched an intensive search to trace her based on a complaint by Rajaram Sonu Khedekar.
According to the police, 47-year-old Rajaram, a resident of Bappa Eden Society, Shani Nagar, Badlapur, had agreed to let his friend and colleague Dinesh Vaze's wife Nutan stay with his family, as Dinesh had to resume his army duty.
"Both Rajaram and Dinesh are members of Indian Army and hail from Mahad district," said Dilip Patil, senior police inspector at Badlapur police station. "Dinesh while rejoining his regiment had requested Rajaram to accommodate his wife till he returned," said Patil.
On July 2, Rajashree, Rajaram's wife, had gone to drop her granddaughter Mrudula to school. When she returned she found her jewellery missing from the kitchen, where she had stashed it. "She immediately informed her husband Rajaram who asked Nutan if she knew anything about it.
Nutan in turn told Rajaram that she knew the local police inspector and told him that she will lodge a complaint against him for accusing her of stealing," said Dr Shivaji Rathod, deputy commissioner of police, zone IV.
Within a few hours, Nutan was nowhere to be seen in the house. The Khedekar family approached the police and registered a complaint. "During investigations, we learnt that a woman matching the description given by Rajaram was admitted to the government hospital in Panvel. We immediately rushed to the spot, but as our officers had called the hospital to confirm about this particular lady's admission, she got a tip-off and fled from there," said Patil.
The police then began a massive search operation in the vicinity, and on July 10 located Nutan at Kalamboli bus stand, and arrested her. Police have recovered all the robbed jewellery from her possession.
