Bharat Bandh: Police don't stop vandals at Central Mumbai cafe

Bharat Bandh: Police don't stop vandals at Central Mumbai cafe
Mumbai: The bandh in Mumbai has more or less been peaceful except for a few stray incidents of stone-pelting, damaging public property. Primarily, BEST buses have been targeted in a few areas of the city.

But at 1pm, miscreants damaged private property in Central Mumbai's Parel area. An outlet of Cafe Coffee Day was attacked, completely shattering the glass door.

"Two miscreants came on a bike, got off and pelted stones. We are shut today because of the bandh but since we don't have shutters, they must have thought we were open," explains Vivek, an eyewitness and employee of the coffee shop.

Worse still, though the media had reached the location, the police still hadn't an hour later, in spite of being informed. "The manager informed the police but they still haven't come," explained Vivek.

And less than 200 metres from the spot, the NDTV crew saw at least a dozen policemen standing on the road.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil had assured that those forcing the bandh would be stopped and action would be taken against them.

The Mumbai Police has deployed all of its 48,000 personnel, including senior police officers, on the field to control law and order.
