Mumbai: A 54-year-old woman doctor repelled an attack from four armed robbers in Ghatkopar on Saturday, leading to their arrest.
Dr Bhavna Khetiya was on her way home around 2 pm on Sixty Feet Road when an autorickshaw pulled up in front of her. Four persons armed with choppers and knives stepped out and told her to hand over the gold ornaments she was wearing.
Khetiya fought back when they tried to snatch her gold chain. She managed to push one of the robbers away. The other three then attacked her. However, she raised an alarm.
A senior police officer from the Pant Nagar police station said, "Khetiya did not fear that she may be killed. Instead, she fought back. It was then that one of the accused attacked her with a knife on her hand. Hearing her cries, a few locals rushed to the spot. They helped her overpower the four accused who were then handed over to the police."
They were identified as Jeevan Narvade, 19, Govardhan Rakte alias Kamal, 23, Sunil Kamble, 23, and Riyaz Badruddin Sayyad, 32. They have been booked for robbery, assault and causing grievous hurt with a weapon.
The court remanded them in police custody till November 24. The police are checking their criminal record. It is suspected that they have been involved in several other robberies and chain-snatching incidents that have been taking place in Mumbai's central suburbs.
Another police officer said, "At her age, she has set an example for people that it is possible to get criminals arrested if the victims fight back. They will not be successful if they are not able to instill fear in the minds of the citizenry."
