Canadian arrested for raping girlfriend

Mumbai: A Canadian national has been arrested for allegedly raping his girlfriend after promising to marry her, the police said today.

David Peter, a security consultant who stays in Lake Home building in suburban Powai, was apprehended last night.

His two friends Lalit Paikrai and Nitin Singh were also arrested on the charge of molesting the victim, said Ashok Jadhav, Senior Inspector at Powai Police Station.

According to the police, the woman, who is in the garment business, was in a relationship with Peter and the two were seeing each other since March 2010.

"The complainant got pregnant late last year. Peter convinced her for abortion and promised to marry her later. However, he started avoiding her," Jadhav said.

On February 28, Peter met her along with his two friends and they went for a drive.

"After driving for a while, Peter stopped the car and warned that he would teach her a lesson for harassing him. Paikrai and Singh molested her and threatened to expose her affair if she didn't comply," Jadhav said.

She approached the police who, after recording her statement and conducting an inquiry, registered a complaint and arrested the trio.

"Peter has been charged with rape while Paikrai and Singh have been charged with molestation," said Jadhav, adding further probe was on.
