Mumbai:
The Shivaji Park police have arrested the caretaker of a 90-year-old man and his 82-year-old wife for stealing cash and two gold bangles, collectively valued at Rs50,000, from his employers.
"The caretaker, Hanuman Kadam, 35, and his associate, Sachin Kadam, 30, were arrested from Nalasopara. We have recovered the booty from Hanuman's house," said sub inspector SS Yadav of the Shivaji Park police station. The duo was remanded in police custody till December 6.
Kadam reportedly stole from the senior citizens -- Murlidhar Chavan and his wife Pushpalata -- because he had to pay the deposit and rent of his house to the owner.
He worked as the couple's caretaker for the past one year. He had left the job three months back, said Yadav. On November 25 around 11am, he and his associate paid his former employers a visit.
After talking for some time, Murlidhar went into the bedroom. Hanuman then asked Pushpalata for water. When she went into the kitchen, he opened a wooden cupboard in the drawing room and stole the valuables.
In the evening, Pushpalata realised that her valuables were missing. She informed her son, Deepak, a bank manager. He lodged a complaint of theft at Shivaji Park police station.
The police collected Kadam's address from a Dadar-based bureau, which supplied caretakers to old couples. They raided his house and nabbed the duo.
