Mumbai:
Mumbai police say they have solved the alleged murder case of a 58-year-old woman who was found dead in Central Mumbai's Dadar area a week ago. They said they have arrested a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the case.
"The police has arrested 26-year-old carpenter Manoj Verma, from Uttar Pradesh while he was on his way to his village, for allegedly killing the elderly lady," said DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
"The deceased, identified as Beleza Cardozo, was found lying in a pool of blood in her house on November 4," said DCP (Zone V) Mahesh Patil.
The incident came to light the same day (around 12 PM) when Ms Cardozo's maid came to her house. She was immediately rushed to Hinduja hospital, but within half-an-hour of her admission she was declared dead, Mr Patil said.
"During the investigation it was found that the accused could be a carpenter who was hired by Ms Cardozo about a fortnight ago for repainting the furniture in her house," added Mr Patil.
The accused allegedly robbed gold worth more than Rs one lakh after killing her.
Ms Cardozo's husband, Tom Cardozo, is in the merchant navy and has been sailing abroad when the incident took place, police said, adding that the Cardozo's family members, including Tom, had been informed about the incident.
