Mumbai: Officials of the Kondhwa police station arrested a 25-year-old man on Wednesday, after he stole another man's wallet at a local gymnasium and used the victim's debit card to shop for gold, besides paying for fuel for his bike at a petrol pump on Moledina roada.
The police said Mohsin Zahed stole Akbar Shaikh's debit card while the latter was working out at a gym on NIBM Road and purchased gold worth Rs 9,000 and filled petrol in his bike for Rs 1,000.
The police studied the CCTV footage recovered from the petrol pump and traced the suspect through the registration plate of his motorcycle.
The victim, who is a businessman, lodged a complaint at the Kondhwa police station after realizing that his wallet had been stolen from his gym bag.
"On the evening of May 14, the complainant had gone to a gym on NIBM road for a work out. Before exercising, he kept his wallet inside his bag in the changing room. After his workout, he did not find his wallet and approached the Kondhwa police station and lodged a complaint against an unidentified person," Assistant Police Inspector, S G Thoptae said.
He added that during the investigation, the police gathered details from the bank and came to know that Shaikh's debit card was used at a jeweller's shop in Kondhwa and a petrol pump on Moledina Road.
"We started an investigation and watched the CCTV footage from the petrol pump and identified the accused, who was filmed filling petrol in his bike. With the help of the number plate, we arrested him from his house in Kondhawa on Wednesday," Thopate said.
The accused confessed to his actions during sustained interrogation.
