Chain snatcher arrested, escapes, nabbed again

Mumbai: A man arrested for chain snatching on Friday escaped from police custody in suburban Bandra, hours after being nabbed and thrashed, only to land behind bars once again in the evening.

Arjun Dashrath Lad (27) was bashed up by the residents of Bandra for allegedly snatching a gold 'mangalsutra' worth Rs 63,000 of a woman, Savita Surethwal (32), on Friday morning and later handed over to the cops of Kherwadi police station, said Awadhuth Chavan, Senior Inspector.

Lad was subsequently arrested and a mangalsutra (necklace) recovered from him, said Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime) Nisar Tamboli.

He was later taken to Bhabha Hospital in a police vehicle for medical examination.

After the medical tests, Lad was brought back to the police station. Soon after getting down from the vehicle, the handcuffed accused pushed the escorting Constables aside and fled, police said.

Police quickly mounted a vigil and succeed in apprehending the chain snatcher from Bandra railway station in the evening, they added.
