Mumbai:
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has assured the residents of an illegal high-rise in Mumbai that he will seek legal opinion on Supreme Court's order to demolish the building next month.
Mr Chavan met with the representatives of Worli's Campa Cola compound today. Shiv Sena leader Anil Desai and BJP leader Mangal Prabhat Lodha were also present for the meeting.
The Supreme Court has ordered the demolition of the 140 illegal flats in the Campa Cola society by November 11. Since the residents do not have the necessary Occupation Certificates, the flats have been declared illegal.
Earlier today, over 200 residents of Campa Cola had gathered to protest a little distance from Mr Chavan's official residence Varsha in Malabar hill. The protesters, who were dressed in black and shouting slogans, were held back by the police before they could reach his residence.
The residents are hoping the Chief Minister will use his discretionary powers to stop the demolition.
