City put on alert after Centre's terror warning

Mumbai: Following intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is planning to strike in Mumbai, security in the city has been beefed up to avert any untoward incident before the Russian president's visit to the city and the Christmas and New Year celebrations, police sources claimed.

"An alert has been sounded. Christmas and New Year are just around the corner and this would attract foreigners. Terrorist groups may take advantage of this. Extensive security measures have been taken," said Mumbai police chief Sanjeev Dayal.

He added that advance security measures are already in place in the city as elaborate arrangements have been made for the visit of president Pratibha Patil and her Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday.

According to the sources, intelligence inputs received from the Centre suggested that LeT was planning to strike in Mumbai and Ahmedabad and their teams have already entered these cities.
