Mumbai:
The Dahisar police have recorded the statement of the Mumbai couple, who were regularly in touch with assistant police commissioner, Baburao Gaikwad, who committed suicide on Monday by shooting himself in his cabin. The police have also recorded the statement of Gaikwad's driver and orderly.
Police sources said, "Gaikwad's family has asked senior police officials to hand over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They say that he would have never taken such a drastic step as he was never in any controversy."
Additional commissioner of police, Ramrao Pawar (north region) said, "The accidental death report has been registered. We are checking his cellphone records."
Another official said, "We have recorded the statements of Narendra Gharat and his wife Meena. The couple said that they knew Gaikwad for years."
Narendra, who is a contractor, said, "We have been friends for 22 years. Some TV channels and newspapers have claimed that my wife had an extra marital affair with Gaikwad. These allegations are baseless."
Meena said, "There was an age difference of 15 years between us, so there is no question of an affair. He was my father's friend and we would visit each other's houses."
Meena added that they were asked to come to police station to record their statements and they had to skip Gaikwad's last rites because of it.
Gaikwad made the last call on December 13, at 2:00 pm to talk to his wife Mangal when his son Aditya picked up the phone. "He asked for Mangal but Aditya kept talking and asked his father to bring home wafers in the evening," said an officer.
Unable to talk his wife, he hung up and that was the last the family heard from him.
