Mumbai:
A Mumbai court framed culpable homicide charges against actor Salman Khan in a decade-old hit-and-run case.
The Mumbai sessions court, charged the actor with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. Salman Khan has pleaded "not guilty" to the charge.
Earlier, the 47-year-old actor had been charged with a lesser offence of causing death by rash and negligent driving, which would carry a maximum punishment of only two years in jail. But a magistrate's court enhanced it to a more serious culpable homicide charge in June.
Eleven years ago in September 2002, Mr Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser when he ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.
In 1998, he spent three days in prison for killing the endangered black-buck deer in Rajasthan.
The actor has starred in many Hindi film blockbusters in recent years and is considered one of the biggest commercial draws at the box office.
