Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother, Iqbal Kaskar, has been arrested on a complaint of extortion.
Mumbai: Iqbal Kaskar, brother of Karachi-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has been booked on charges of extortion and assault, with his two associates. The arrest has been made following a complaint by an agent, Salim Sheikh.
The complainant alleges that Kaskar and his men had demanded Rs 3 lakh after thrashing him. Kaskar was questioned at the JJ Marg Police Station for over four hours before being arrested.
Additional Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash told reporters, "A case has been registered against Iqbal Kaskar and an associate. The complainant says he was first threatened on the phone and then beaten up at a room in Damarwala Building."
Kaskar's lawyer Shyam Keswani told reporters, "According to my client this is a false case. We will prove this in a court of law. There is nothing in this case."
The alleged incident took place in a room at Damarwala Building at Pakmodia Street in South Mumbai's Bhendi Bazar area.
Kaskar and his associates have been booked under IPC Sections 387 (Kidnapping and putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
The 48-year-old alleged victim, who is a resident of Byculla, approached the local police and the FIR was registered. The matter was transferred to JJ Marg police.
Kaskar had been deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003. He was wanted in a murder case and his alleged role in the controversial Sara Sahara case where a building came up illegally on government land but a court acquitted him in both the cases in 2007.
