Mumbai: Three of the 10 seized properties of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim will be auctioned next month. A notice has been published in newspapers by a department under the Union finance ministry. The auction will take place on November 14 and the advertisement invites bids from interested parties in sealed envelopes.
When Dawood Ibrahim -- one of India's most wanted - fled the country, he left behind property worth crores, whose value has gone up significantly. The ten properties in and around Mumbai had been seized by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
In 2015, seven of the properties had been auctioned. Bids had come from lawyers and former journalists. But questions were also raised on whether the auction was genuine or whether under its cover, the ownership of these properties were transferred.
The three properties that will be auctioned this time are located in Bhendi Bazaar area of South Mumbai. These include the Shabnam Guest House on Yakub Street, five rooms in Dambarwala Building on Pakmodia Street and Hotel Raunak Afroz on the same street.
Hotel Raunak Afroze was one of the properties auctioned in 2015. Former journalist Balakrishnan had submitted a deposit of Rs 30 lakh and won the bid. But since he could not deposit the remaining amount - nearly Rs 4 crore -- the bid was cancelled.
Dawood Ibrahim is currently in Pakistan. His brother Iqbal Kaskar who was recently arrested in an extortion case, has admitted to speaking to him four times in the last few years. Officials said Iqbal Kaskar had provided the addresses of four residences belonging to Dawood Ibrahim in Karachi.
