Mumbai:
Alcohol and fast bikes cost a call centre employee in Mumbai his life on Saturday.
The deceased Zeeshan Sayyed lost control while he was bike racing with his friends late at night on the Ahmedabad highway. He died when he lost control and collided with a tree.
Five other bikers who were behind Sayyed received minor injuries. According to the Nalasopara police, Sayyed and his friends Chetan, Arjun, Harshad, Pramod and Devendra worked in a call centre.
After finishing work around 2 am, they went to a local dhaba. They downed a few drinks and decided to race on the highway.
Sayyed's bike was leading the race, while the other two bikes were behind him. As all of them were drunk, Sayyed lost control of his bike and crashed into a tree.
"All of them were racing on the highway late at night and had consumed alcohol. The first biker lost his life after ramming his bike into a tree, while the others escaped with minor injuries," said Dinesh Bhagwan, Nalasopara police station.
"These people often indulge in bike racing, especially on Saturdays."
A few locals took the injured to the hospital. They were hospitalised after two other local hospitals refused to admit them fearing a criminal case, as the bikers were intoxicated.
Hospital sources said that Sayyed was dead on arrival. "One of them was dead before they were brought to our hospital. All of them had consumed alcohol," said Dr Dilip Palange of Krishna Hospital.
However, Sayyed's friends allege that it was the delay in admitting Sayyed to a hospital that caused his death. "Our friend would have been with us, if only he was treated on time," said Devendra.
