Mumbai: A 25-year-old alcoholic man was arrested for setting his mother afire after she refused him money for liquor in suburban Bhandup here, police said on Sunday.
The woman suffered 40 per cent burn injuries and was undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to the police, Rupesh Zingare was apprehended, after he set his mother Nirmala (50) ablaze, pouring kerosene on her at their house in Ashmi Gurkha chawl yesterday.
Rupesh, who is unemployed and an alcoholic, had asked his mother to give him some money for liquor.
"However, his mother refused, then the furious man lifted a stove and poured kerosene on her before setting her on fire," inspector P Bhargude at Bhandup police station said.
Nirmala sustained 40 per cent burn injuries and was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment and is out of danger, Bhargude added.
The family is poor and Rupesh always demanded money from his parents for alcohol, the police said, adding that the accused often had a heated argument with his parents whenever they refused him money.
The accused was booked on charges of attempt to murder, police said.
