Early images of Mumbai's 6000-crore Ring Road

Mumbai: A new Ring Road being planned for Mumbai will cost the city 6,000 crores.  The Maharashtra government is planning a 32-km road around Mumbai, from Nariman Point to Virar, and Nariman Point to Ghatkopar, with added connectivity to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

The four-lane road will include an underground tunnel. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is reportedly keen on the project; the government is waiting for environmental clearances for the plans.

Mr Chavan said last month that constructing a coastal road by reclaiming land from the sea has been done successfully in several other cities like Tokyo and New York. In Mumbai, rules do not permit coastal roads, so special permission is needed from the government.  "Only roads on stilt can be constructed. We won't go for stilt road because there are security issues," Mr Chavan said. "It has been done earlier with the Marine Drive promenade (south Mumbai) 40 years ago and no ecological problems have been faced," the Chief Minister said in October.
