Mumbai:
A woman from Saudi Arabia and her fiance were rescued by encounter specialist with the Mumbai police Daya Nayak while they were being assaulted by the staff of an Andheri gym frequented by Mr Nayak. The gym's staff allegedly also tried to molest the woman.
Oshiwara resident Ritu (name changed) has been a member of True Health Club located on Andheri link road for the past six months.
According to the Amboli police, around 7 pm on Saturday, Ritu's fiance Salim Farooqui went to pick her up at the gym. He ended up having an argument with a trainer and the manager, who were denying him entry because he wasn't a member.
Farooqui told them that he was there to pick up his fiancee but the manager continued to abuse him and the duo got into a scuffle.
"The manager, Prakash, two instructors, Amit and Rafiq, and another staff member began beating up Farooqui. They tried to molest Ritu when she intervened," said an official from the Amboli police station.
"When Ritu intervened, they pushed her in the corner and started assaulting her too. They even tried tearing her clothes," Farooqui said in a statement to the police.
Mr Nayak, who was working out at the gym, came out to the reception area on hearing the commotion. He stopped the men from assaulting the couple, comforted the duo and sent them to the police station to file a complaint.
"I heard the scuffle and came out. When I saw the couple being beaten up, I stopped the men and asked the duo to go to the police station to file a complaint. It is true that they would have been beaten up further had I not intervened, but I was merely doing my duty as a police officer," said the encounter specialist.
The couple approached the Amboli police immediately and filed a complaint of molestation and assault against the men.
"We arrested the four men on Monday and produced them in court yesterday," said a police officer.
The authorities at True Health Club refused to comment on the issue.
