Event organiser, Assistant Director among 4 held for extortion

Mumbai: Four persons, including an Assistant Director and an event organiser, have been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder and extort money from a film producer, police said on Friday.

"Event organiser Salim Khan, Assistant Director Tariq Bhatt and their associates Mohsin Khan and Jalal Khan were arrested yesterday," Deputy Police Commissioner KMM Prasanna told reporters.

According to police, they allegedly attempted to kill film producer Sikandar Mirza on November 3 in suburban Oshiwara, where he was shot. Mirza escaped with minor injuries.

The next day, Mirza received a phone call from a person who introduced himself as Ganesh and threatened to shoot Mirza if he did not pay Rs 5 lakh, they said.

Based on Mirza's complaint, police registered a criminal case on twin charges against unidentified persons, said Prasanna.

During the investigation, Salim was picked up. He subsequently revealed the role of Tariq, Mohsin and Jalal, Prasanna said, adding that further probe was on.
