Mumbai:
The Coast Guard has brought under control the fire on board abandoned merchant vessel Mol Comfort, which was being towed by the tugs off the coast of Mumbai.
The fire was detected by a Coast Guard chopper on Saturday while the ship was being towed to Oman. Cooling operations are currently underway and the company which owns the ship will begin the salvage operation once the process is complete.
A Coast Guard ship has been assigned to monitor and render assistance.
Last month, the derelict ship broke into two parts but all the 26 crewmembers - 12 Russians and 14 Filipinos - were rescued by the Coast Guard.
Mol Comfort, the 316-m-long vessel was carrying 4,500 containers from Saudi Arabia, the Coast Guard said.
