Mumbai:
Five men employed by the Indian Navy have been arrested for allegedly molesting a young female banker before attacking her husband in a pub in Mumbai's suburban Khar, police said.
The incident happened early on Sunday morning when the men chased the woman down the streets of Mumbai.
"They were produced in the Bandra court on Sunday and remanded to police custody till April 29. All five are Class IV officers of the Indian Navy and work in the electronics department," an officer concerned with the case told NDTV.
The five accused, arrested yesterday after the police intercepted them on the Western Express Highway, were identified as Maheshwar Mahendra Singh (26), Ashish Jaikishan (29) Tirthnath Dilpanath (25) Sham Bhandare (29) and Chandan Mishra (26). They have been booked for unlawful assembly, rioting, molestation and wrongful constraint.
According to the complainant, one of the men made lewd remarks at her when she was present at a pub with her husband. A heated argument followed and the five men punched the victim's husband. The bouncers then intervened and threw the group out of the pub.
The fuming men waited outside until the pub shut down and began chasing the autorickshaw in which the couple was travelling towards Borivali. The chase continued for 40 minutes. Scared, the woman then dialled the police helpline number.
The police then directed the banker to tell the autorickshaw driver to take the vehicle towards Kasturba Marg police station and accordingly, a trap was laid and the accused were intercepted under the Borivali flyover, police said.
They were taken into custody and the victim's statement was recorded. As the pub falls under the jurisdiction of Khar police station, the FIR was transferred to Khar by the Kasturba Marg police.
