Mumbai: Two persons have been arrested for a security scare at the Mumbai airport on the weekend over objects flying near the main runway.
A Jet Airways pilot was forced to abort take-off on Saturday evening as airport officials wondered whether the objects were remote-controlled "parachutes". The plane was to fly to Ahmedabad when the pilot told the Air Traffic Control that he had seen some "orange-yellow luminous flying objects."
It has now emerged that the objects were promotional balloons by a diamond company.
The Mumbai police said the company had organized a cricket match for its employees and had launched the balloons. The organisers will be booked for negligence, said the police.
The Mumbai police along with intelligence agencies investigated what happened.
The possibility that these were Chinese lanterns was also considered.
The Mumbai runway is close to the Juhu beach where such lanterns are sold over the weekends.
