Former Mumbai cop challenges underworld link charge

Mumbai: Former senior police inspector Ashok Borkar, accused of having links with the underworld, on Monday moved an application in the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court, stating that he will get himself arrested if he is found guilty.

According to Borkar's application, he learnt through the media that his name has been linked with builder Ravi Punjabi, allegedly working as an underworld gangster's commission agent and has been tipping off about city builders.

Recently, Punjabi was arrested by crime branch sleuths for allegedly owing allegiance to a gangster operating from foreign land. In police custody till December 10, he was booked under MCOCA charges.

"There are allegations that I, along with Punjabi and another person, went to Dubai some time back to meet the gangster. There are charges that at the behest of Punjabi, I threatened and arrested two businessmen from Borivli to grab a plot," Borkar wrote.

After he learnt that he would be summoned by the Crime Branch for questioning, he called up a Crime Branch official and spoke on the issue. "I told the officer that I am willing to cooperate with the investigations. If I am found guilty, then I am willing to be taken into custody," Borkar stated.

Borkar opted for voluntary retirement in 2008. He was last posted as senior police inspector of the Crime Branch's Bandra unit and was heading the Neeraj Grover murder case.

The court has asked the Crime Branch to file its say by December 10. "We have not received the court's order copy yet. We will respond after studying it," said joint police commissioner (crime) Himanshu Roy.
