Mumbai: A raiding party of the Hill Line police in Ulhasnagar was in for a huge shock when it arrived at a certain house after being informed that it was a gambling den. As it turned out, the house belongs to a policeman. The police team arrested 12 persons from the spot, including an infamous criminal and the son of a well-known businessman. The officials also recovered Rs 72,000 in cash.
According to the police, Constable Ramdas Misal got a tip-off that large-scale gambling was going on in a one-room apartment behind Prabharam Mandir, Hill Line in Ulhasnagar-5. Senior Inspector Narendra Jadhav formed a special team headed by Assistant Police Inspector Somdutta Khandare comprising officials Ramdas Misal, Kiran Dhande, Shyam Wagh, Vinod Pawar, Balu Patil and others.
Following the tip-off, on Friday around 8.50 pm, the police team raided the room. The cops found 12 persons playing cards, and seized their mobile phones and cards. They also recovered Rs 72,000 in cash from them. The arrested persons were taken to the police station. During investigations, police were taken aback to discover that the room where the gambling was going on belonged to a police constable attached with the Kalyan police control room.
"Under the guidance of Inspector Jadhav, we raided the room. We were shocked to find out that the room belonged to a police constable. The matter is under investigation," said API Khandare, the investigation officer. Four more rooms in the colony belong to policemen.
The constable in question had shifted with his family to Igatpuri and handed over the key of his room to a gambling don Jeetu Karira, who was often seen roaming around with police officials in the city and hanging out at police stations. The constable is now absconding. According to the officials, one of the arrested persons is the son of a prominent city-based jeweller. A notorious criminal Tony Chug was also among them.
