Harassed over hafta, man attempts suicide
Mumbai: A man attempted suicide late Tuesday night after allegedly being harassed by the Sewri police for not paying hafta for his Chinese food stall.

The incident occurred at 9.30 pm when Vikram Namdev Munde (32), consumed rat poison at his home in Kaula Bunder, Sewri, after he was fed up of the abuse and harassment that was meted out to him at the hands of the police.

Munde alleges that the cops kept pestering him for hafta and when he was unable to pay them, they began to abuse and harass him.

"I told them my brother was ill last month and I had spent Rs 1 lakh for his medical treatment. I told them I would pay them next month, but they did not ease up."

Munde's wife Vidya added that the cops even threatened to shut down the food stall. Munde further elaborated that on January 15, a robbery had occurred next to his stall and when he had gone to report the theft, instead of registering the complaint, they beat him up.

"I have told my wife that if I die, she should not leave these corrupt policemen. I will write a letter to the police commissioner," Munde said. Munde is currently in JJ Hospital and is recuperating.

However, Baniram Chauhan, sub inspector at Sewri police station refuted all claims. He said, "The allegations he is making are all false. We are now heading towards JJ Hospital to take his statement."
