Mumbai: On Monday morning, 45-year-old Vikram Shirish Vasudev committed suicide by jumping off the sea link from its north-bound lane. He had reportedly lost his son to cancer and was suffering from depression.
Personnel of the Mumbai Fire Brigade conducted search operations in the sea but the body couldn't be found. The search operation was called off after a few hours.
On August 30, Vikas Jhore, 34, an employee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, jumped off the sea link in front of his wife.
Only a day before, 65-year-old Lalchand Rathod allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the sea link. Mr Rathod had instructed his driver to drive towards the sea link. Once they reached, Mr Rathod got out of the vehicle and jumped into the sea.
And the day before that, 33-year-old Chintan Shah, a resident of Kandivali, committed suicide from the sea link. Mr Shah stopped his vehicle at around 4.30 pm on the sea link's north-bound lane and jumped into the sea.
The police are in talks with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to prevent such cases. One of the proposals under consideration is to install nets on the sides, another is to put together bike squads which will get into action the moment anyone stops their car on the sea link.
