Mumbai: Indrani Mukherjea, who has testified that jail officials beat a woman prisoner to death last week in Mumbai and attacked other inmates including her, does have injuries on her arms and legs, a medical examination has confirmed.
The report from a Mumbai hospital states that Ms Mukerjea shows the sort of injuries caused by a blunt instrument or force.
Jail officials, however, are likely to argue in court that Ms Mukerjea was hurt in a prisoners' riot that erupted on Saturday in the Byculla prison after inmate Manjula Shetye died, allegedly after officials inserted a wooden stick in her vagina. However, the final post mortem report has ruled out sexual assault using a lathi or stick.
Ms Mukerjea was among 200 prisoners who climbed onto the roof of the prison in the heart of the financial capital.
She said in court yesterday that she witnessed Ms Shetye being dragged by the sari that was draped around her neck and then being assaulted by officials, six of whom have since been suspended and one charged with murder.
Ms Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 on charges of strangling her daughter, Sheena Bora, and setting her body on fire. Till then, she was known as a prominent media entrepreneur who, along with husband Peter Mukerjea who has also been arrested, owned a TV network that they sold in 2009.
Ms Bora had been killed in 2012, but her murder was discovered three years later after Ms Mukerjea's driver was arrested in another case and confessed to the killing while detailing his former employer's role.
Ms Bora was engaged to Rahul Mukerjea, who is Peter Mukerjea's son from an earlier marriage.
