Mumbai:
A 25-year-old resident of Santacruz committed suicide by immolating herself on Wednesday outside her boyfriend's Kandivli home.
She had been jilted by him a few months back. Relatives revealed that Zareen Shaikh had been involved romantically with Yasin Shaikh for the past five years.
Yasin, an MBA student, had reportedly promised to marry Zareen, but went back on his word a few months ago to marry another woman.
Police officers investigating the case divulged that Yasin had been urging Zareen to sever ties with him after his marriage to another, but she kept on insisting that he divorce his wife and marry her instead.
"Over the past few days, Zareen had been sending Yasin text messages, threatening to commit suicide if he did not do her bidding.
Yasin did not realise that she would act upon her threats," said an officer at the Kandivli police station.
At 8 am on Wednesday, Zareen appeared in front of Yasin's house, calling out to him.
When he refused to make an appearance, she poured kerosene over her body and set herself on fire. Yasin's neighbours rushed her to the hospital, where she died, having sustained 80 per cent burns.
"While she was being taken to the hospital, Zareen confided in a friend that she wanted to marry Yasin and had warned him of her dire plan if he didn't leave his wife," said the officer.
Zareen's family has lodged a complaint with the police, accusing Yasin of abetment to suicide.
API LG Shinde said, "We have detained Yasin. We are investigating the case and will arrest him when we have concrete proof of his abetment to the suicide."
