Mumbai:
After the shocking murder of senior investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in broad daylight in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government today swung into action, ordering special police teams to probe his death.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at his residence where he took stock of the investigation, officials said.
State Home Minister R R Patil, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Rajnish Seth and several senior government officers were also in attendance at the meeting.
The Chief Minister directed Mr Patnaik to arrest the culprits involved in the murder of Mr Dey.
Amid reports that the journalist had been receiving death threats, his family has now been provided police protection.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Home Minister said that necessary measures would be taken by the government to protect the journalists. "We have made a plan for journalists' protection which we will share with you at the right time," Mr Patil said.
Senior NCP leader and PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that it was very important to get the culprits behind bars.
"The way bullets were pumped into his body, no law could have helped him at that time. The relevant department will look into it. But what happened is sad, bad... It is very important to get culprits behind bars," Mr Bhujbal said.
The police, meanwhile, are examining the CCTV footage of Crisil House, which is located opposite the scene of the crime. The footage, though, isn't very clear because it was raining heavily at the time of the journalist's murder.
The post-mortem report of Mr Dey shows that five bullets were pumped into his body and one bullet that hit his shoulder did not come out. He died due to the bullet injury.
The bullets have been sent for ballistic examination to ascertain the weapon used in the murder.
Mr Dey, who was working as an investigative editor with MiD DAY, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the suburban Powai area of Mumbai on Saturday.
