Mumbai:
Three-year-old Sangita will reunite with her family on Friday, a week after she was kidnapped from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station, an act that was caught on the CCTV camera. Though the child and the accused in the case were brought to Mumbai on Wednesday night, the police are yet to complete the formalities before they handover Sangita to her parents.
The girl was rescued by the Haridwar Police on July 7. The accused, Raju, who was caught on the CCTV camera at the station, was also arrested.
In a press conference, the police said that the accused had apparently treated the girl well. There were no injury signs on her and she was not forced to beg as it was being suspected earlier, the police said today.
According to the cops, though Raju does not belong to any gang, a thorough investigation is being carried on.
The police expressed gratitude to the media for their coverage of the case, which helped in the rescue operations.
"Media deserves the whole and sole credit for this happy ending," the police said.
The CCTV footage, which was widely circulated in the media, showed how the accused got off a train, wandered around the waiting room of the station, spotted a family with a sleeping baby, sat beside her and then disappeared with the child; all this in less than five minutes.
According to the police, the incident took place on June 10 around 2 am.
Sangita's parents are contract labourers from the Parbhani district in Vidarbha who clean railway tracks. On the night of the kidnapping, they were returning back home but missed their train and decided to stay at the station itself.
