Maharashtra Minister Orders Son To Pay Rs 1,000 Fine

The minister says that his son was with his friends and would not have taken the wheel.

As punishment for arguing with a police officer, a minister in Maharashtra has fined his son Rs 1,000.

Transport Minister Diwakar Raote, who is from the Shiv Sena, says his 38-year-old son, Unmesh, began arguing with policemen in Mumbai last night when they suspected he was drunk and would drive the car that was parked near him.

Irked, Unmesh entered into an argument with the police, who were on a drive to check drunk driving. Things cooled off after an inspector intervened.

When Mr Raote learnt of the incident next morning, he asked his son to go and pay a fine for interfering with the work of an on-duty government servant.

"The police were doing their job. They were checking everybody and even fined others. Even if I am a minister, I have shown that I won't spare even my own son," Mr Raote explained, adding his son is a teetotaler.

The minister says that his son was with his friends and would not have taken the wheel.

In a similar incident, Mr Raote had ensured a police constable riding a motorcycle without a helmet was fined as per law.
