Maid robs employer on first day at work, arrested

Mumbai: A 22-year-old maid servant, who was arrested on Sunday for allegedly robbing her employer of cash and gold ornaments worth Rs1.8 lakh, was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days by the holiday court on Monday.

Sheetal Patil alias Swati alias Sandhya allegedly robbed from the flat of a Shivaji Park businessman on Saturday to fund her new house, which she wanted constructed at her native place in Chiplun, Ratnagiri.

Sub-inspector SS Yadav of Shivaji Park police station said, "The accused was arrested from her house at Diva and the entire booty was recovered from her."

Saturday was her first day of work at Vikram Patwardhan's, 32, house. His 60-year-old father was alone in the flat at the time of the incident.

Patil said she was in desperate need of money to get a new house and the salary of her husband Mangesh, who is a tempo driver, was a pittance. Patwardhan had given an advertisement in a Marathi morninger on October 26, saying a maid servant was needed. Patil had met Patwardhan at his flat on Saturday and started work.

After Patwardhan left for work, Patil opened the bedroom cupboard and decamped with the valuables and cash. The theft came to light that afternoon when he returned home to collect the cash.
