Man arrested for sending lewd SMSes to housewives

Mumbai: Borivli police arrested a 47-year-old man late yesterday night for sending lewd smses to housewives in Dahisar and Borvili area. The accused, identified as Rajesh Vajdhani, was staying in a rented accommodation at Auripada, Dahisar (E). He was absconding since last month after a housewife from Borivli registered a complaint against him for sending obscene text messages.

According to the police, Vajdhani used to procure personal documents of his friends and close relatives and then get SIM cards based on them. "He used to get five to six SIM cards based on one document and send smses from different SIM cards to his victims," confirmed sub-inspector Umesh Sawant of Borivli police station.

Surprisingly, none of Vajdhani's relatives or friends came to know about the SIM cards being procured under their names. "We are still trying to find out why his relatives and friends lent their identity proofs and other residential proof documents to the accused," added Sawant.

Vajdhani's luck ran out when his attempt to lure one housewife led the victim to approach the cops and register a case. According to the victim, Vajdhani first introduced himself to the victim's family members in a temple at Borivli. He then befriended the family. Later, he began harassing the victim. Fed-up with the lewd smses and phone calls, the victim informed her family members following which a complaint was registered in the first week of January. However, Vajdhani was absconding since the complaint was registered.

On a tip-off, the Borivli police came to know that he was at his residence in Ahmedabad. A team was dispatched yesterday morning and he was nabbed, said Sawant. "He has been booked under one case of sexual harassment. However, there are five to six non-cognisable offences registered by women against him as well," he added.

Vajdhani has been booked under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and forgery under the IPC. According to the police, Vajdhani claims to be the owner of several properties in Mumbai and Ahmedabad and runs a small business.
